Welcome to New Orleans. The birthplace of Jazz. A place where you are free to roam the streets with a drink in your hand and won’t meet a stranger. Amazing food and awesome fun. Step outside of your hotel and take a stroll down famous Bourbon Street and have a Hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s or hop on a street car and take a ride down St. Charles Street to enjoy lunch at Commander’s Palace. If you like the water, try a jazz cruise on the Steamboat Natchez. The options are endless but what you really came for is to stand on Canal Street and yell, “Throw Me Something, Mister!” as the parades pass by! Bands and dance teams from all over the country come to strut their stuff in over 65 parades!! Choose as many as you can stand and remember what you catch you keep, so pack an extra bag for all your goodies, or “throws” as they call them.

Noted for being the best city in the U.S. to celebrate Mardi Gras, New Orleans will not disappoint. The best time to visit are the days leading up to Fat Tuesday even though Mardi Gras season spans several weeks. The weekend before Mardi Gras hosts the parades with the largest floats, the livest bands, and of course the best throws.  The Endymion Parade, which rolls Saturday night, has the famous Flambeaux throwers, they dance and twirl fire in a light show you will not soon forget. The Bacchus parade is lead by a celebrity King every year. In 2010, Drew Brees held the title! On Monday, or Lundi Gras as it is called, the kings of Zulu and Rex meet at the River to get the keys to the city from the Mayor of New Orleans! The meeting starts with a ceremonial Champaign toast and is followed by an amazing free festival that includes live music and Mardi Gras Indians. Make sure you are awake early Tuesday morning to claim your spot on Canal street to see the Rex Parade, followed by Zulu Parade and the Truck floats. Cap off your evening with drinks on Bourbon Street but be sure to be out of the street by midnight as the mounted police will have horses ready to clear the streets so clean up can begin.
